Gateway Station
Large space station in the Solar System, positioned at Jupiter’s L5 Lagrangian point. A major transit point for interstellar ships arriving at and departing from the system. Location was chosen as a compromise between the convenience of being near Jupiter (and the Hydrotek processing plants in low orbit around the gas giant) and the need for ships to be as far away as possible from Jupiter, the Sun, and other massive celestial bodies in order to have easy transition to superluminal space. Ideally the station would have been positioned directly opposite to Jupiter, at the L3 point, however, the delta-V costs of shuttling building materials, propellant, and other supplies to such a remote location made L3 an untenable prospect.
Gateway Station has the highest stable population of any station outside of dedicated civilian hab-rings/tubes. As Sol’s busiest port, it’s rapidly grown in size year to year, despite its otherwise inaccessible and inhospitable environment.
