Songs by Jennifer Hale and Todd Herfindal

Acclaimed voice actress Jennifer Hale and famed music producer Todd Herfindal co-wrote the lyrics and music for these stunning pieces. Hale, best known for her work on classic, console games such as Mass Effect and Overwatch, also narrated the audiobook for To Sleep.

“Sea of Stars”

Inspired by a transformed Kira Navárez after the creation of Unity, this song became the anthem for her journey and reflects her struggles to come to terms with the Soft Blade/Seed.

Go behind the scenes with Christopher Paolini, Jennifer Hale, and Todd Herfindal where they talk about the process behind “Sea of Stars” in the livestream recording of the song’s debut.

Lyrics

Light years slumbering
something dark inside
craving only flight
I need it right now
Won’t let it drown
We’ve come so far
To sleep in a sea of stars
A sea of stars

Blackness I’ve become
Takes my destiny
The gravity is killing me
I need it right now
Can’t shove it down
We’ve come so far
To sleep in a sea of stars
A sea of stars

I am gone to dark nothing to decide
The path was laid before I came
I need it right now
Won’t set it down
We’ve come so far
To sleep in a sea of stars
A sea of stars

“Chiara’s Folly”

One of the tunes Kira played on her concertina for the crew of the Wallfish, “Chiara’s Folly” is a popular colonist song about the misadventures of the cat, Chiara.

Lyrics

If I run away, they can’t find me
there’s no proof, of what I do
so I make a game, always playing . . . playing you
and then I jump into the night
Closed eyes, if I fall the choice the is mine
last life, unless I keep on landing the right way

Oh yeah
Cos I’m too fast for you to see me shine
No I can’t stay, so sad
You can’t catch me, I leave your world behind
Steal you blind (oh yeah it’s all mine)

If this perfection in my reflection troubles you
Too bad for you, cos it’s
My rhyme, if I fall the choice is mine
last life, unless I keep on landing the right way

Oh yeah
Cos I’m too fast for you to see me shine
No I can’t stay, so sad
You can’t catch me, I leave your world behind
Steal you blind (oh yeah it’s all mine)

If I twist and fall in the spin of it all, that’s ok
I’ll live to play another day. . .

Oh yeah
Cos I’m too fast for you to see me shine
No I can’t stay, so sad
You can’t catch me, I leave your world behind
Steal you blind (it’s all mine)

“To Hell and Back – Gregorovich”

The latest piece by Hale and Herfindal, this ballad pays tribute to the Wallfish’s most vital crew member: Gregorovich. When trapped in the madness of circuitry gone awry—in his deepest moment of crises—Gregorovich reached out to Kira for help. It’s this crucial tipping point that the song explores.

But how did Hale and Herfindal capture the cosmic loneliness of an unbalanced ship mind? By incorporating the cosmos itself. That’s right, listen closely and you will hear actual sounds from space! The intro is followed by audio from Pluto and the track ends with sounds from Uranus and Mars.

Lyrics

Kira . . . I don’t feel so good.
I don’t . . .
Everything is wrong ways round.

My head is in my hands again
My heart it beats inside my friends

It’s you, you all who get me through
So much I know and wish I knew

Oh God I’m cracking up
and I’m not the only one
Who’s gonna save us from this place now
When all I’ve got is time

and I’m starting to lose my mind
Fly you to hell and back and face it down

Face it down

It’s dark in here, no eyes to see
I live through you, pretend I’m free
I hear you as you walk the stars
My god I ache to go that far

Sometimes in the dark
think I can feel my heart
Who’s gonna save me from this place now
When all I’ve got is time

and I’m lost inside my mind
Fly you to hell and back and face it down

Face it down
Show me how

I feel your hands reach for me
A thing I thought could never be
There may be hope here after all
And I will choose to take this fall

You may be cracking up
But you’re not the only one
We’re gonna save us from this place now
Cos we own this time
I’m back inside my mind
Fly you to hell and back and face it down

Face it down
Own it now
Face it down
